Working towards a design that is visually uncluttered, and creates a pleasant space results in a structure that is both beautiful and, remarkably, has lower embodied energy.
Embodied energy is the energy inherent in the creation of the building itself. I look for opportunities in the structure’s design to lower the impact to the environment.
Your house can make it's own operational energy. Recent progress in photovoltaics and tax incentives allow you to produce your own clean sustainable energy while making a sound financial investment. I will work with you and your builder to make choices that have energy use in mind.
Opportunities for lower environmental impact include exceeding code requirements for windows and insulation, window frame materials, exterior and continuous insulation, the type of insulation (e.g. non-petroleum based mineral wool), interior fixtures, appliances, solar panels, ductless heat pump systems.
The energy we use while living in our homes – lighting, heating, cooling - is operational energy use. We can make choices here too that reduce impact.
